GAJA TASTING
Please join Tacoma Wine Merchants and importer Wilson Daniels for a special event tasting of the highly collectible wines from inimitable producer GAJA, led by Andrew Chaplin of importer Wilson Daniels.
Located in Piedmont in northwestern Italy, the GAJA winery is widely considered to be one of the greatest estates in the world, producing coveted and collectible labels. The story of the GAJA Winery can be traced to a singular, founding purpose: to produce original wines with a sense of place which reflects the tradition and culture of those who made it. This philosophy has inspired five generations of impeccable winemaking. GAJA is a pioneer and guardian of tradition, a legacy that continues to reshape the standard for excellence in the world of winemaking today.
Angelo Gaja was the first to produce single vineyard wines in Piedmont and revolutionized wine making practices in the region, introducing Bordeaux varietals and the use of barriques. GAJA has led Barbaresco to international acclaim and brought about a resurgence of Italian wines more broadly. But Angelo Gaja isn’t one to sit still, instead, he thoughtfully sought out new opportunities in regions beyond Piedmont, including Tuscany (Montalcino and Bolgheri), and Sicily.
Pieve Santa Restituta is Gaja’s estate in Montalcino, purchased in 1994. It is the family’s first expansion outside the Barbaresco and Barolo areas since its establishment in 1859.
Ca’Marcanda, GAJA’s estate in Bolgheri (Alta Maremma), was born in 1996 propelled by Angelo Gaja’s ambition to challenge himself with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.
IDDA is a joint venture in Mount Etna region between Angelo Gaja and prominent Sicilian winemaker, Alberto Graci, started in 2017. Their new winery is functioning for harvest this season, with a tasting room soon to follow.
We will taste through this selection of seven wines, two whites and five reds, representing the award-winning properties of GAJA in Piedmont and their wineries in Tuscany and Sicily:
