We’re Kelly and Rob, owners of Tacoma Wine Merchants.
It all started years ago, on their first date, a blind date in which Rob and Kelly shared a glass of wine. Rob, being obsessed with all things grape since he can remember, was collecting wine and dreaming of wine pursuits. Kelly was a wine lover, as well, so it’s no surprise the vagaries of life led them to purchase Tacoma Wine Merchants in 2017 from the original owner that opened the store in 2003. Rob grew up locally and has a BA from UW, studying Humanities and Philosophy, and completed the Enology Certificate Program at WSU. He made and assisted in making wine in Washington State and has a fondness for Barolo (and Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, high acid white wines, the list goes on)… Kelly hails from Austin, TX, and has a BS in Nutrition from Texas State University. She loves Champagne, Burgundy and Southern Rhone wines.
We’re blessed to live in a region with an abundance of seafood. From locally caught salmon, halibut, or tuna, to freshly caught Dungeoness crab, spot prawns, oysters, or clams, we seem to have it all. Okay, so maybe we don’t have fresh lobster, but we can buy them. And what’s better than fresh seafood? Fresh seafood with the right wine pairing!
There is a still-growing interest (and frequent misconception) regarding wines that are called “natural”. I put this in quotations because there is still no agreed upon definition of “natural wines”, though France recently came up with an initial qualification, and many agencies that promote or govern the certifications have their own constitutional definition.
Taking on the task of building a new website and a first ever Tacoma Wine Merchants online store led to many late nights. I will not complain about spending the extra time with my partner (and husband), however, neither Rob nor I knew what we were getting ourselves into….we soon found out!
