My name is Bill Bonnie and I’ve been in the wine business in some shape or form for over 20 years. My love of wine began when I would meet my father for a drink to catch up, we would always share a bottle of wine,(which often led to a second bottle and dinner on him of course, I was young and poor). I found I really enjoyed wine and the experience that went with it. Soon, when I was out with my buddies instead of drinking cheap tasteless beer, I found myself ordering wine. This was the seed that led me to where I am today, owner and founder of Tacoma Wine Merchants.
People often ask me how I got into the wine business. I can assure you when I was six, I wasn’t telling my mother I wanted to be a wine guy. It is a path that I just kept finding myself on. People want to know my training, how did I learn about wine? I tell them, I drank a lot of bad wine. It’s true, I drank a lot of bad wine to understand what good wine is and I also learned about wine on a budget, (remember I was young and poor).
All this has brought me here to you to help you find the wines you like in whatever budget that suits you. I tell people you’ll never get a bad bottle of wine here, I weed out all the bad stuff before it comes through the door by tasting everything before I buy it and put it on the shelf. You may like some wines more than others but you’ll never go, yuuucckkk! This stuff is awful I need to dump it down the drain(if you do, bring it back, full with the cork and I’ll find something that better suits you. Chances are the wine was flawed in some way). Unlike grocery stores or box stores where some “wine stewards” assist you in selections of wine’s they’ve never tasted, I taste everything and have over 20 years of working knowledge to assist you in finding the right wine for you in the price range you’re comfortable with. My regular customers often tell me, we come to you Bill because you know our palate. That gives me great pride and satisfaction. Knowing I’m able to take the mystery out of wine for some, find wines that are perfect for their dinner party or their cellar for others, or just help people that aren’t sure what they are looking for but need help. That’s my job and I’m happy to do it. I also take pride in tracking down your favorites and will special order any wine in any quantity that I can(sometimes there are minimums required for some deliveries). Try getting that from your box store liquor stores and grocery stores.
I’m a small wine shop that carries a quality selection of wines I stand by. I may not have fifteen pinot grigios but you can bet the three or four that I do have are darn good!
